Starlings on frosty thistles, as it finally begins to feel more like mid-November. It’s a woolly gloves morning here in Hampshire as I head out with Rosie.

A little window on the water vole - Arvicola amphibius. In my life, I’ve had two special encounters with this endangered species. For one day I joined Wildcru’s reintroduction programme when I was editor of a wildlife magazine in Oxford.

Blackbird and ivy. Fill the feeders and they will come. The garden is all a flutter with the welcome return of birds big and small. We even had a nuthatch yesterday.
